Jason Varitek’s double RBIs help Boston Red Sox defeat Chicago White Sox 5-3 – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox catcher, Jason Varitek had a tremendous day with the bat as he scored two RBIs and went 1-for-4 with an average of .237 in the Red Sox 5-3 win against the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago on July 31.
During the first inning, Adrian Gonzalez doubled to deep centre-field but Jacoby Ellsbury flied out to left-field while Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis popped out to short-stop position. Similarly, the White Sox batters also struggled with the bat as Paul
Konerko walked but Adam Dunn struck-out swinging, Brent Lillibridge grounded out to pitcher and Alexei Ramirez lined out towards third base at the bottom of the first inning.
Red Sox got off the mark by posting two runs while the White Sox added only one run to reduce their lead 2-1. Varitek struck a two-run homer (412 feet) towards left-centre and Darnell McDonald scored a single run. On the other side, Tyler Flower posted one
run when Brent Morel hit a double-run shot towards deep centre-field.
In the third inning, the White Sox levelled the game 2-2 when Alex Rios singled off left-field, Carlos Quentin added a tie run and Dunn moved to second base to end the third inning. The White Sox went ahead 3-2 during the fourth inning when Ramirez hit a
single-run shot to centre-field and Gordon Beckham contributed one run. Morel moved to third base at the end of the fourth inning.
The pitchers took control over the fifth and sixth inning as they did not permit any run. The Red Sox starter, Andrew Miller was expensive with the ball as he surrendered 10 hits and three runs in his five innings. He gave up three earned runs and only one
walk with an ERA of 5.36. Miller was able to strike-out eight batters on his 106 pitches.
Boston went ahead 4-3 by taking two runs in the seventh inning. Pedroia singled to centre-field while Marco Scutaro and Ellsbury added two consecutive runs to lift the momentum of the Red Sox. During the ninth inning, the Red Sox got a 5-3 lead when Ellsbury
scored one run on the drive of Gonzalez to deep right-field.
However, Boston snatched a 2-1 victory in the three-game series after winning the series finale.
