Jason Witten supports Jerry Jones’ comments, believes Dallas Cowboys have shot at championship
Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten has totally backed comments of the franchise owner and general manager Jerry Jones, who recently expressed his belief that Cowboys could still win a championship.
These comments were somewhat ambitious because Cowboys are currently placed at the bottom of National Football Conference (NFC) East and have struggled to perform well on consistent basis.
However, Witten also believes that is too early to predict an end to Cowboys’ playoff hopes of this year. According to the details Witten said:
“You mean about us contending for a championship? Yeah, every man in this room should believe that. If they don’t, then (they should) get out of here.”
He added:
“There’re a lot games where we have done good things, and there’re a lot of things we need to improve on.”
Cowboys have played five games this season and have lost three of them. Like Jones, Witten has also refused to buy the claim that Cowboys might struggle to end the season on a positive note.
Just as Jones did, Witten, too, has cited examples of New York Giants, who went on to qualify for the playoffs last season from NFC East after winning just nine games.
Witten is of the view that just like the way Giants had a shot at qualifying for the playoffs till the last game of the last regular season Cowboys also have a shot at entering the postseason this year.
Mentioning that there are still a lot of games (11) left for the Cowboys in the season, Witten said:
“Did the New York Giants stink at 7-7 (last season)? That’s the way this league goes. I’m not saying that’s the formula to do it; you’ve got to start winning games.
He added:
“The mentality is ‘Let’s get it corrected, we have the guys in this room that can do it, now you’ve got to go show it.’”
Cowboys have some edge over other teams in the division because they have only played five games so far, while Giants, Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins have played six games each.
Cowboys can certainly improve their record, but only if they stage consistent victories.
