I was watching a program a few years ago and it was doing a look at the famous story.

While they were sure there probably wasnt a 50 ft steel giant or some of the other items in the story, they are sure its based around something that really happened.

I dont know where Jason was from (sorry havent read the book since i was real young) but i believe in the book he was a king or in line for the throne and was tested for the throne by having to go get the golden fleece.

They dont know if he was royal or not, but they are sure he was a trader. He was sent to the Black Sea to negotiate rights to the major gold mines in the region. (fact)

The people doing the look into the story wanted to prove this was the case (going to the black sea) so they built a ship based on how jason's ship was described.

They had a couple of examples (at least) to go on on where the travel took place:

Jason talks of a narrow water way, and two facts about it:

"We were being pushed and pulled as if the water was fighting with and against us"

"The walls seemed to be closing in on us"

In the waterway between the Med and the Black Sea there is a narrow water way.

and in a certain area (not sure if in the same spot)

there are two rivers of water: one going east one going west. both are so close in depth to each other that they would be very noticable.

Sometime during that voyage, the water way gets ever narower and the walls (cliffs) seem to close in very close.
