Jastrzebski Wegiel defeats Zenit Kazan by 3-2 : FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship
A Pool A match of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship took place between Jastrzebski Wegiel of Poland and Zenit Kazan of Russia on October 10, on the second day of the tournament in Doha, Qatar.
The contest between the two sides took five long and gruelling sets that enabled the spectators to see some thrilling display of volleyball skills. The first two sets were won by the Polish club comfortably but Zenit Kazan stepped up their game in the third
and fourth sets to take the match to a decisive fifth one. However, it was the Polish club that earned itself the final laugh by bagging the match at the following final set scores: 25-22, 25-17, 11-25, 21-25 and 19-17.
The coach of the Polish club, Lorenzo Bernardi, made the following comments at the press conference after his team had won the match: “Like the captain mentioned, we're very happy. It was a very important win because we're a new team. This will definitely
give the players more confidence, especially because Zenit Kazan has a lot of top players with a lot of experience. Still we haven't won anything yet.”
On the other hand, the Russian coach, Vladimir Alenko, shared his feelings in the following manner: “I agree with the captain, we started to play from the third set. I think we lost concentration during the first two sets, but we recovered. It was obviously
a great game to watch. The players have shown really nice volleyball.”
The first set saw Zenit Kazan take the lead at 5-3 and stretch it to 7-3. The Russian club was still leading with the coming of the second technical time out at 16-13. However, the Polish did not give up and made the match reach a tie at 17-17. Before long,
the Polish club had won the set at 25-22.
The second set was tied at 3-3 and later on at 10-10 but the Polish managed to get the lead and bag the set at 25-17. The third set of the game saw Zenit Kazan take the lead at 5-2 and kept it till the second technical time out at 16-5. After the two teams
came back onto the courts, Zenit Kazan did not look back till they had the set at 25-11. The fourth set was also bagged by the Russians but the Polish club took matters into their own hands by bagging a final set win at 19-17.
The recent win has enabled the Polish side to improve to a 2-0 record in their pool. Next in line for them is the still undefeated Polish team is a match with the Trinity Western Spartans club.
