I was wanting to find out is this the same degree as a web developer? Also does anyone know of any good schools that offers this degree in San Diego , California? and is this field in high demand?

  1. I don't know of any developer "degrees", but certainly there are various certificates.  If you are looking to get work as an entry-level Java developer, then I would say (as someone that sometimes hires Java developers) that a Sun Microsystems' "Sun Certified Java Programmer" (SCJP) would help get you in for an interview.  No experience and no certification will likely result in no interviews.  SCJP doesn't replace experience, but does show that you have attained a level of basic knowledge that puts you ahead of other entry-level candidates.

USCD has a one-quarter program to prep you for the exam.  There are other educational and "training companies" offering prep courses (just Google "java certification course san diego").  If you are the wife of an active duty Marine, I would check into educational assistance for dependents, maybe starting with the family service center.

Oh, and for your question "is this field in high demand?", are you asking about Java developer opportunities?  If so, just go to Monster.com or Dice.com and search on "Java".  That should give you some indication for your current or future locales.
