  1. let me put it this way... if you are still programming in Java 10 years from now then you will be WAY out of step.

It doesnt take a long time to 'learn' a langauge... starting from nothing you could probably learn enough to pass a SUN exam in about six months.  What does take time is to gain the expereince needed to really understand computer science, software management, and to gain the people skills needed to be a top senior software developer.

If you want to do programming as a career then the most direct route is to go to college and stundy computer science for a 4 year BS degree. With that you will be able to secure a starting level job pretty easily.  Though I have known people who through great personal interest and creativity have turned a programming hobby into paid gigs and then on into a career, though its tougher that way.

  2. Depends on your programming experience - is this your first computer language or do you know other?

If you're just starting off, then to understand computer basics, and get to grips with Java - to be proficient to write your own programs will on how often you are learning ... if you have an aptitude you should be able to write programs within a few weeks, and good within 6-12 months - that's assuming you do some learning of at least an hour a day.

If you already know another language, then learning a new language syntax would take a few weeks.

The tough thing with programming is learning to solve problems in a disciplined and logical way; and then understanding the environment you are running in - say Unix, or .Net (whatever version / flavour).

To gain lots of experience and be regarded highly will take 5-10 years of experience within the industry. So depends what you want - but not 10 years to learn!

And be careful about being duped into paying too much for online learning ... Microsoft offer lots of training stuff and you only pay to take the exams. Look into the "For Dummies" books as they tend to be good.  Also class learning - after hours, or at a college where you share the experience with others will help.

    Good luck!

  3. How good one is depend on their abilities to learn and absore, how long to learn the same

  4. Well programming is 90% experience and 10% theory, so pretty much you learn as you go, you can grab a book and read it all but you won't really understand until you practice and you won't really learn Java until you start programming so maybe that's why you heard that it takes 10 years to learn it but in reality you need about 1 year to get the hang of it and from then on it's all you and your research.

To start I would really recommend a class, it's way better when you have someone to answer your doubts, the hard part is not the language, Java, C#, VB they are pretty much the same, it's the logic behind it what matters.

    Good luck
