Former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 captain Javed Miandad has blamed the Indian Premier League for the dip in form of the Australian team.
He has warned the international players of the “cash trap” and suggested them to concentrate on playing for their nations. Miandad said that the cash-rich tournament has affected many teams and the worst affected were http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746.
Miandad also said that some players ignored the importance of playing for their nations chasing big money in the IPL. He said, “I believe Australia’s slump has a lot to do with their players’ association with the IPL.”
The veteran Pakistani cricketer also claims that many players including Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, Matthew Hayden and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Gilchrist-c918 retired from international cricket because of the IPL.
He said, “Most of their top players got a bit too distracted because of the big cash thrown at them by the IPL. They even started ignoring national duty which has really caused their downfall.”
Miandad insisted that all this trouble could have been avoided by the Australian team if their players would not have fallen for cash which is the main attraction in the IPL.
The cash-rich league started in 2008 and has been welcomed by cricketers since then. However, there has been a lot of criticism on the league as well since its inauguration.
Not only have players stepped down from national duty, there have been allegations of corruption on the league as well. The founder of the league, Lalit Modi, was thrown out by the Board of Control for Cricket in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 following corruption charges on him.
Due to such controversies, many critics feel that the integrity of the game is at stake. There is also a serious threat posed to the other formats of the game especially Test match cricket.
The popularity of Twenty20 cricket has badly hurt Test match cricket and many former cricketers have suggested that the longest version of the game is no more required. However, many cricket lovers and experts believe that the real beauty of cricket lies
in Test match cricket.
One Day cricket has also been hurt to some extent and there have been experiments of splitting the 50-over innings into two innings of 25 overs each.
On a question of IPL being a threat to international cricket, Miandad replied, “It certainly will, there is too much disparity when it comes to pays and if proper steps are not taken then top players will continue to put this Twenty20 league above international
cricket.”
Meanwhile, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 skipper Daniel Vettori also stated that the quantity of Twenty20 matches played is affecting the performance of the players in the longest version of the game.
The Blackcaps were also criticised a lot after cheers were heard from their dressing room following the player auctions in the fourth edition of IPL. New Zealand were playing the Test match against Pakistan at that time when the players found out the prices
for which they were bought.
Although Vettori blamed Twenty20 cricket for his team’s poor performance in Test cricket, he still defended the IPL in which he was sold for $550,000. He stated, “It (the IPL) is part of cricket and you have to deal with it, but if you use it as an excuse
for your performance then that’s not good enough.”
Vettori’s contradictory statements of blaming Twenty20 cricket for poor form and defending the IPL clearly indicates that players do fall for the cash trap that has been set by the League.
