Javi Colomo feels the heat at the Thailand Golf Championship
Javi Colomo of Spain carded a bogey-free five-under par 67, in the opening round of the Thailand Golf Championship, to take the share of the third position on the leaderboard, on Thursday, December 6, 2012
The second edition of the Asian Tour event is being played at the Amata Spring Country Club, with a prize purse of US$1 million on offer to the participants.
The Spaniard got off to a flying start, by carding birdies on each of the first two holes that he played. He added another shot to his scorecard on the fourth hole, followed by five par putts to reach the turn in three under.
He then maintained consistency in his game and played some decent shots on the back nine of the course, to gain birdies on the 14th and the 16th hole.
At the end of the day, he found himself settled two strokes behind the pace set by Charl Schwartzel of South Africa, who carded a sparkling seven-under par 65.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he said that he was really pleased with his performance on day one. According to him, his wife and caddie, Cristina, helped him read the greens well and she played a crucial role in his success on the course.
“I want to keep the concentration and the intensity in all the shots,” he said. “Today I didn't make too many mistakes. I putted really good. Cristina helps me to read the greens. She reads the greens really nice”.
Talking about the course conditions, he said that it was really difficult to play under hot weather conditions.
According to him, the weather was pleasant while he played his first nine holes. Afterwards, he started feeling the heat, which caused troubles for the Asian Tour rookie.
“The first nine holes, very nice. Not too much hot, but the last five holes, it was terrible for me,” he said.
He added, “The first maybe four, five months, it was really hot, but now we understand or we know what we have to do, drink a lot of water, ...You have to take your time and breathe, because in this weather, it's very, very hot”.
