Javi Colomo makes a confident start at the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters
Javi Colomo carded a four-under par 68 in the opening round of the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters, to share the third spot on the leaderboard, on Wednesday, September 5, 2012.
At the end of the round, the Spaniard was two strokes behind the leader Thaworn Wiratchant, who posted an impressive six-under par 66, to lead the field by one stroke.
Jhonnel Ababa was the other player who joined Colomo on the leaderboard, after carding six birdies against two bogeys. Jonathan Moore of the United States took the sole second place with a five-under par score, at the Kota Permai Golf & Country Club.
Colomo seemed really happy with his performance, as he created numerous birdie chances throughout the round. According to him, he could have posted a better score on the leaderboard, if he had availed all the opportunities.
“I’m very happy because I played very well,” he said. “I could have played five or six under, but this score is still a good start”.
While talking about the course conditions, he told that the rough around the greens were really thick. Therefore, it was essential to hit the greens in regulation, to avoid poor finishes.
Therefore, he tried not to miss the greens and putted amazingly during the day – he did not make a single three-putt.
“I played well from tee to green. I had a lot of birdie chances and didn’t make a single three putt,” he said. “This is a tough golf course because the rough around the greens are very thick so I tried not to miss the greens”.
He also confirmed that he took a two-month break from the Asian Tour and spent most of the time in Spain. Moreover, he participated in a couple of tournaments and recorded a victory in one of them.
He stated that it was a proud victory to him, as the legendary late Seve Ballesteros also won that event twice in his career.
“I was at home in Spain during the break and played in two local tournaments where I won one event in July,” he said. “It was a very proud victory for me because the late Seve Ballesteros won twice in that event”.
