Javier Garcia updates on Antonio Margarito injuries, health
Javier Garcia, who trains alongside Robert Garcia in Oxnard, California, has updated on Antonio Margarito’s health following his mega-fight with Manny Pacquiao November 13.
Javier and Robert prepared Margarito for his fight with “Pacman” in Arlington, Texas, in which he was visibly outpointed for twelve rounds and took a savage beating according to many.
While the bigger Margarito said beforehand he would use aggression and stamina to wear Pacquiao down, the Philippine congressman instead managed to avoid danger and hit Margarito almost at will, frequently asking the referee in later rounds if combat should
continue due to severe cuts on Margarito’s face.
An update from Margarito’s promoter Sergio Diaz following the fight said post-fight surgery on a broken orbital bone was a “success,” and that Margarito had been told to remain outside of the ring for two months.
Javier Garcia confirmed Diaz’s sentiment in an exclusive Fanhouse video saying: “Margarito, he looked pretty bad the night of the fight.  But the next day, the swelling went down.  Of course the bruises stayed, you know, minor bruises, but it wasn’t as bad
as people saw it in the fight.”
While Margarito has made no announcements about future plans, his promoter Bob Arum indicated that he would like pit “The Tijuana Tornado” against former opponent Miguel Cotto in June 2011.
Margarito came back in late rounds to rally an emotional win over the Puerto Rican superstar in 2008, handing Cotto his first professional defeat.
Arum indicated he would like to have Margarito-Cotto participate in a rematch that coincided with the Puerto Rican parade in New York City.  The rematch would be a good sell since it would contribute to boxing’s infamous rivalry between Mexico (Margarito)
and  Puerto Rico (Cotto) at the relevant time.
Cotto, 30, is the current WBA junior middleweight champion of the world.
