Javier Hernandez looks to use Champions League strike as launchpad
Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez believes that he can use his strike in the UEFA Champions League against Valencia to push on and nail down a regular starting place for the English Premier League giants.
The Mexican international struck the only goal of the group stage match after coming on as a substitute, allowing the Red Devils to escape the Mestalla with all three points, helping them top the group alongside Scottish Premier League champions Rangers.
Now, the 2010 FIFA World Cup star is hoping that he can use his goal to help push his case for more game time.
"The goal will give me so much confidence. I am only at the start of my career with United and to score so early in the Champions League is a big boost. I always used to watch the Champions League when I was back home in Mexico. It is one of the most important
tournaments in the world, so I was always keeping up with it. It is great to be a Manchester United player and I want that to continue for a long time."
The 22-year-old striker joined United over the summer from Mexican club Guadalajara in a deal worth seven million pounds. Hernandez first made an impact when he netted in the victory over Chelsea in the Community Shield. He has made two appearances for the
club in the EPL, but has yet to score in the competition.
The pacy forward also featured prominently for Mexico during their World Cup campaign, netting two goals, one each against France and Argentina.
Hernandez faces competition from England striker Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen, Gabriel Obertan and Federico Macheda if he is to be a regular in the United first-team.
