Javier Marti, Federico Delbonis enter the main rounds – Copa Claro 2012
Javier Marti ousts Rogerio Dutra Silva 2-6, 6-4, 6-3
Javier Marti of Spain came back from a deficit of one set to rout Brazilian Rogerio Dutra Silva 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the final round of the qualifying draw at the Copa Claro in Buenos Aires on Monday. Ranked 177th in
the world, the Spaniard upset his higher ranked opponent in two hours and 32 minutes.
Silva started solidly and was looking to clinch the match comprehensively right from the beginning. He broke Marti twice in the first set and capitalised on the double to seal the opener 6-2.
The Brazilian was going strong, as he captured opening two games to go ahead 2-0 in the second. However, Marti was not in a mood to go down easily, winning three of Silva’s serves to grab the set 6-4.
In a similar fashion to the first two sets, Silva made a great start in the decider. The Brazilian broke his opponent two times in the first three games to build a 3-0 advantage. However, Marti performed exceptionally well
after that, snatching six straight games to bag the set 6-3.
The Brazilian will encounter Benoit Paire of France in the first match of the main draw.
Federico Delbonis beats Wayne Odesnik 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-2
World number 150, Federico Delbonis of Argentina, upset Wayne Odesnik of USA in three sets 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-2 in the final qualifier. The Argentinean needed two hours and 38 minutes to clinch a close contest.
Delbonis broke the American in the first and ninth game of the opening set. The Argentinean held all of his own serves and claimed it 6-3.
Odesnik and Delbonis each grabbed a break of serve in the first twelve games of the second set, levelling the score at 6-6 and forcing a tie-breaker. The American handled the pressure better than his opponent and lost just
two points, sealing it 7-2.
Both players comfortably won their serves at the start of the decider to take the score to 2-2. Delbonis snatched a couple of Odesnik’s games after that and continued to win his own. The Argentinean served out the final set
at 5-2.
Delbonis smashed a total of nine aces and 67 percent of the first deliveries in this final qualifier match. The Argentinean was unsuccessful in saving the one break point he came across but the left-hander made the most of
five of the 13 break points he faced.
The Azul, Argentina, resident will play Frederico Gil of Portugal in the opening round of the main draw.
