i always have had minor problems with my jaw cracking especially in the cold weather and such. recently i got rubberbands for my braces. my orthodontist told me it might cause pain in my jaw. however i don't feel much pain but my jaw keeps getting locked and stuck in place and i have to crack it out. if i dont crack it out i cant open my mouth past a certain point . it is on the right side. my jaw feels really tense and pressurized like someone is squeezing it. i am scaredi have lockjaw(tetanus) or does it sound more like tmj?

can someone please give me a little insight :/

  1. I would absolutely tell your ortho about what's happening!  Especially if this worsened after elastics.  If he/she doesn't listen, I would definitely ask a dentist to see if they can come up with any reasoning.  It may well be TMJ but you need to keep asking professionals because you KNOW something is wrong.

  2. I have tmj and this sounds alot like it! My parents left for Maine when I was about 13 and left me with a neighbor and when I woke up my jaw was completely locked up and I forced it open. Dont recomind that!

I have braces also and my Ortho had to fix the tmj first before the teeth bc the braces can make the tmj worse if it is not fixed. So you need to tell your parents so they can contact the ortho. I got a plate for the TMJ

lockjaw, is a bacterial disease that affects the nervous system. As a result of widespread immunization, tetanus is now a rare disease. Tetanus occurs more often in older people and in agricultural workers for whom contact with animal manure is more likely and immunization is inadequate.A common first sign of tetanus is muscular stiffness in the jaw (lockjaw), followed by stiffness of the neck, difficulty in swallowing, rigidity of abdominal muscles, spasms, sweating and fever.

So I do not think you have lockjaw unless you have been playing in manure and dont have your immunizations!

    best of luck!
