Jaw problems?

When I wake up in the morning m jaw usually locks(Only the left side). When I eat, it cracks. Also, when I keep my mouth in the same position for a certain amount of time it gets tight. Is this normal? Should I get a mouth gaurd for night time? Or should I go see my doctor/dentist?

p.s. this only happens to the left side of my jaw, the right side has very few problems...

  1. Definitely get a guard.  Go to Target or a similar store and in the toothpaste isle there is one called Doctor's Nightguard.  (About $20) Don't be afraid to trim it down if it feels too bulky.  Your dentist probably will advise you rest your jaw, avoid gum, tough steaks or breads, and avoid resting your jaw on your fist.  If you sleep on your side, don't put too much pressure on one side of your jaw.

Your jaw is like a tank...if it's turning to the right, the left side is moving to turn.  If your left side hurts, you're probably using the right side more.  Focus on chewing evenly on both sides.

  2. I've been having the similar problem for years, except it's on both sides. Something is wrong with your TMJ. Go to a dentist and see what he recommends. Mine gave me a customized nightguard but it doesn't seem to work, but it's probably because I've had this problem for so long. I'm thinking of TMJ surgery when I can afford it.

BTW, If you get a generic night guard at the store, it's not customized for your jaw & teeth so it won't be very effective.
