Jay Bayron wins at the PGM Eastwood Valley Masters
Jay Bayron of the Philippines defeated Hsu Mong-Nan and Nicholas Fung with a one-stroke margin, at the PGM Eastwood Valley Masters, to claim the third Asian Development Tour title of his career.
The tournament was being played at the Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club, offering a prize purse of US$80,000, with US$14,000 on offer for the winner.
The victory also propelled him to the top of the ADT Order of Merit. As a result, he also moved one step closer to earning his Asian Tour card for the 2013 season.
According to the Asian Tour qualifying policy, the top-three players from ADT will receive full-time playing rights for the upcoming year.
“I knew how important this win would mean to me and my rankings on the Order of Merit,” he said. “It isn’t easy to finish in the top three of the Merit list but I know that it is even more stressful trying to earn your Asian Tour card in Qualifying School”.
“This win means a lot to me. I’m happy I won and now I’m quite confident of staying inside the safety zone. I just need a good result in Chinese Taipei (Yeangder ADT, which is the last event of the season) to cement my position,” added Bayron.
The two-time winner this season started off his final round campaign with a three-stroke lead over his competitors in the field.
However, the lead sliced to only one stroke, after Hsu and Fung posted 70 and 68, respectively, against Bayron’s even-par score.
No one else in the field challenged the Filipino on top of the leaderboard. As a result, he comfortably pocketed the winner’s cheque in Miri.
Hsu was the man who really challenged Bayron on the top. After recording a birdie on the 15th hole, he needed only one shot to force the game to enter into the playoffs.
However, a bogey-birdie finish ruined his chances of clinching the first ADT victory of his career.
Despite facing a defeat in the final moments of the event, Hsu was happy with his overall performance in the tournament. It was his second runner-up finish of the season.
