Jay Bothroyd vows to make up for lost time
England debutant Jay Bothroyd has spoke of his regret at wasting his talent earlier in his career, but has vowed to make up for his earlier misdemeanours and prove his worth at the tail
end of his career. He noted Chelsea star Didier Drogba as his blueprint, but acknowledged he would have to work hard at his physical state in order to maintain his current high standards into his 30’s.
Bothroyd, now 28, told the Evening Standard: “I wasted a lot of time when I was younger so I don't feel a day older than 22. There are many players over 30 who still play for England,
still play in the Premier League. Look at Drogba, for example: 32-years-old and he doesn't play like it. It's the way you take care of your body. You have to be professional now.”
The Cardiff striker has been in sparkling form this season, catapulting his side to top of the table with his 13 goals so far this campaign. It seems the former Arsenal man has finally
settled down, following a number of unsuccessful stints in the Premier League, and one in Serie A. Something of an enigma, the striker has a petulant temper to go with his outstanding ability, but since moving to Cardiff, his attitude has taken a back-seat
while his ability on the football pitch has come to the fore. His international call-up was still something of a surprise though and it is hard to see him adding to his solitary cap unless England are hit with another barrage of injuries which ravaged the
squad this week.
Bothroyd will have his sights set on promotion to the Premier League for now though and looking to add to his already impressive goal tally.
