Jay Bruce sparks as Cincinnati Reds defeat San Francisco Giants 7-2 – MLB Update
Cincinnati Reds’ right-fielder, Jay Bruce had a notable day with the bat as he had two RBIs including one run and went 1-for-4 with an average of .266 in the Reds’ 7-2 win against the San Francisco Giants at Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati on July 30.
In the first inning, the Reds’ batters stepped on the gas to blast five runs and got a 5-0 lead. Brandon Phillips singled to left-centre and Edgar Renteria scored the first run. Joey Votto and Phillips both added the second and third run for the Reds when
Bruce hit a single-run shot towards centre-field. Chris Heisey singled to centre-field while Miguel Cairo and Bruce added the last two runs collectively.
Giants opened their scoring account in the second inning when Pablo Sandoval hit a solo homer (449 feet) towards right-centre to cut their deficit 5-1. In the third inning, Madison Bumgarner struck-out swinging, Andres Torres struck-out looking and Jeff
Keppinger flied out to left-field without taking any run.
During the fourth inning, the Reds scored two runs to extend their lead 7-1. Renteria was saved to reach second base on the throwing error of Giants’ third baseman Sandoval while Drew Stubbs contributed one run. The final run for the Reds was taken by Renteria
when Cairo singled to left-field and Phillips moved to third base to end the fourth inning.
On the other side, the Giants were able to score just one run during the fifth inning to reduce the lead 7-2. Keppinger reached towards short-stop on a throwing error and Chris Stewart posted the last run for the Giants. The final four innings of the game
went without any run.
Heisey said, “At any point, I think our offense can take off. We didn't have a lot of key hits lately but were able to sting them together tonight. As a hitter you hate to see a guy battling out there when you're not scoring runs.”
In the seventh inning, Stewart singled to centre-field but Torres struck-out swinging, Carlos Beltran flied out to left-field and Sandoval grounded out to third base. Giants missed some scoring opportunities at the top of the ninth inning when Keppinger
singled to centre-field but Beltran flied out to left-field and Nate Schierholtz struck-out swinging.
After having a comfortable win, the Reds confirmed a 2-0 victory in the three-game series against the Giants.
