Jay Bruce’s homer gives 5-2 victory to Cincinnati Reds against San Diego Padres – MLB Update
Bronson Arroyo pitched brilliantly and Jay Bruce had a three-run homer on Friday, August 12 to help the Cincinnati Reds beat the San Diego Padres 5-3 at Great American Ball Park.
Bruce’s three run homer came in the aftermath of Joey Votto’s walk.
Jay was pleased with the performance that evinced in a crucial encounter, paving the way for 1-0 lead in the three-game series. "I was thinking that's what I would do," Bruce said of the walk to Votto. "I had a pretty good idea he was going to throw me sliders."
Faced with a dilemma with who he had to choose for hitting, he had to go for Bruce eventually. "It was an uncomfortable situation for them and I've been there many times. It comes down to who do you want to face," Baker said. "Bronson's a warrior. You have
to drag him from the mound.”
Friday’s game kicked off with Orlando Hudson’s single to left in the very first inning against Bronson Arroyo, as he allowed a hit and run that gave the San Diego Padres an early 1-0 lead that continued for a while.
Mat Latos pitched an effective inning to keep that lead in the favour of the San Diego Padres. Arroyo was once again subject to another hit. This time it was Nick Hundley who homered to double the lead for the San Diego Padres.
While Arroyo was initially unable to contain the San Diego Padres, he had to fight his way into maintaining his poise. Latos pitched the third inning as another hitless, but that did not continue for long.
Bruce doubled in the fourth to bring the lead down to 2-1 for the Cincinnati Reds. Both the starters of their respective teams then kept pitching strong innings that kept the score at 2-1 till top of the seventh inning.
But the Reds resurged in the bottom of seventh when Latos came on the mound. Drew Stubbs singled to centre to level the score for the Cincinnati Reds. Sam LeCure came in the eighth for the Reds and allowed another run to Logan Forsythe that gave the Padres
a 3-2 lead.
While the Reds seemed down, everything turned for good as one of their hitters took it on his own to reverse the tides. It was Jay Bruce, who coming after Joey Votto’s walk, hit a three-run homer to take the Cincinnati Reds to a 5-2 lead.
With that homer, the game’s essence changed. Francisco Cordero came in as a closer and tossed hitless pitches to have a shut-out inning, lifting the Cincinnati Reds to a 5-2 victory against the San Diego Padres.
