Jay Bruce’s homer helps Cincinnati Reds defeat Milwaukee Brewers 7-3 – MLB Update
Cincinnati Reds regained their form after a virtually disastrous series against Atlanta Braves and beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-3 at the Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati on Monday, May 30.
Cincinnati had an aggressive beginning on Monday when Jonny Gomes hit a sacrifice fly to give an early 1-0 lead to his team. It was Chris Narveson whom the Reds’ hitter took to task and scored the first run. While the lead was apparently little Travis Wood
pitched effective innings to keep the team in a dominant position.
Monday’s game saw Jay Bruce hit a three-run homer to turn the tides against the Brewers and lead his team to victory. "When you get a chance to catch the teams ahead of you and you do it, it's nice," said Bruce, who also tripled for the first time this season
and had a base hit. "We did a good job tonight. I wasn't overly concerned about the cycle. It is what it is. I just wanted the win."
Importantly, Bruce’s homer came at a time when the Brewers were in a fairly comfortable position to win the game. Having an enviable record this season, the star hitter ranks fifth in the 2011 Rankings with a .405 batting average, having hit 17 RBIs and
six homers. Not only that, his May record speaks volumes of his rapidly improving performance.
The Reds then went ahead with more energy as Bruce put on display his typically excellent talent. He hit a three run homer to take the lead to 4-0 which apparently seemed irreversible. Not only that, Paul Janish singled to centre to pile up the lead to 5-0.
Wood, however was subject to hit in the fifth inning when he gave up four hits and allowed three runs. Carlos Gomez and Josh Wilson homered to left and Ryan Braun doubled to deep right-centre to each score a run to bring down the Reds’ lead 5-3.
The Reds stormed backed into the game in the sixth inning when Fred Lewis succeeded in gleaning two runs which included a throwing error by catcher J. Lucroy. Sergio Mitre gave up three hits in the inning and allowed two runs to give a 7-3 lead to the Reds.
Jose Arredondo, Nick Masset and Francisco Cordero threw shut-out innings to seal the Reds’ 7-3 victory against the Milwaukee Brewers.
