Jay Cutler and Philip Rivers set to renew rivalry as Chargers play the Bears on Sunday – NFL News
Jay Cutler and Philip Rivers are all set to renew their old rivalry as the two brilliant quarterbacks prepare to face each other on Sunday when the Chicago Bears take on the San Diego Chargers on Sunday at the Soldier Field, Chicago.
Cutler and Rivers rivalry goes back all the way to 2007 when Cutler was playing for Division rivals Denver Broncos. Cutler faced Rivers on five occasions during that period with Rivers Chargers winning four times. The Rivalry started during a Chargers and Broncos game in 2007 when Rivers came out to celebrate a Chargers defensive stop with cameras catching the quarter back shouting at Cutler.
The rivalry became heated in 2008 when Cutler went on National Television panning Rivers arrogance and the way he carried himself on the field. The Rivalry died down as Cutler moved to the Chicago Bears and National Football Conference North in 2009 and hasn’t faced Rivers in over two years.
The reporters were however not going to let any opportunity go to get some interesting sound bites. During Wednesday’s media briefing Cutler was asked a few questions about the rivalry with Cutler dodging reporters’ attempts to stoke some old flames. Rivers praised his former nemesis however telling reporters, “I have nothing against Jay. I think he's a heck of a player. The one thing you know about him is he's a super competitor. One thing he's doing right now is he's leading his team to win four in a row. I'm fighting like crazy to just try to get a win."
The Chicago Bears are in good knick winning four games on the trot with Cutler having an amazing season. The Bears destroyed the Detroit Lions in their last game 37-13 and will look to continue their winning run this Sunday. The San Diego Chargers are in bad shape and visit Soldier Field on the back of a four game losing streak with last Sunday’s 24-17 loss to division rivals Oakland Raiders particularly painful for fans.
Rivers echoes those feelings and believes the rivalry should take a back seat as he looks to help the Chargers get back to winning ways
“We haven’t had much time to worry about that,” Rivers said. “We’re just trying to find a way to win a game. It’s been a rough stretch.”
