Jay Cutler takes another beating as the Seattle Seahawks defeat the Chicago Bears
After missing last week's game against the Carolina Panthers because of a concussion – suffered after being sacked nine times by the New York Giants – Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler received another pounding as he was sacked six times by the Seattle
Seahawks who won the game 23-20 on Sunday October 17.
How it happened
The Chicago Bears had trouble getting their offence going all game as running back Matt Forte was held to only 11 yards on eight carries and Cutler completed less than 50 percent of his passes. In fact, it was Devin Hester who provided most of the offensive
spark by running back a punt 86 yards for a touchdown late in the game to give the Bears some hope. But the Bears failed to cover the onside kick allowing Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to take a knee for the win.
Hasselbeck was solid on the day throwing for a season-high 242 yards with one touchdown. Mike Williams had a solid day catching the ball for Seattle with 10 receptions for 123 yards.
What they're saying
After seeing what the Giants accomplished against the Bears, the Seahawks defence came fired up looking to get at Cutler.
"We were l*****g our chops, the way the Giants had success," said Seahawks safety Lawyer Milloy, who had one of Chicago's six sacks.
Despite getting run over for the second time in as many outings, Cutler was confident that he was feeling no adverse effects from the concussion he sustained against the Giants.
"I felt fine physically," he said. "There was never any concern with that. I felt fine out there playing. We didn't get it done today. It's very simple."
Cutler has now been sacked a league-leading 23 times.
Running back Marshawn Lynch, who was acquired recently from the Buffalo Bills, was also competing in his first game for Seattle and ran the ball for 44 yards on 17 carries and had a touchdown.
"(It's) kind of like a training camp, and hopefully, three or four weeks from now, we'll be hitting the ground running," Hasselbeck said of Seattle's newest running threat. "Marshawn can just relax and play, (Brandon) Stokley can just relax and play."
What it all means
With the loss, the Bears' record now falls to 4-2, which means that the race in the NFC North is tightening up. The Green Bay Packers, who also lost over the weekend, aren't far behind at 3-3, and with the Vikings win over the Cowboys on the weekend, they
now find themselves back in the hunt as well. The Packers host the Washington Redskins next Sunday October 24.
For the Seahawks, the win puts them to 3-2 in a tie for first in the NFC West with the Arizona Cardinals who they host next week.
