Jay Don Blake registers his third Champions Tour victory at the Boeing Classic
Jay Don Blake birdied the second extra hole in the sudden-death playoffs of the Boeing Classic, to register the third Champions Tour victory of his career, on Sunday, August 26, 2012.
Blake and Mark O'Meara took advantage of the overnight leader Tom Jenkins’ faltering performance for a six-over par 78, and surged to the top of the leaderboard after posting a four-under par 68 each.
As a result, both the players had to contend against each other in the playoffs, where O'Meara had the chance to take his opponent down with a birdie putt on the first extra hole.
According to Blake, he was ready to shake hands with O'Meara, to congratulate him for his victory after the birdie.
However, he did not need to do that, as O'Meara missed an easy eight-footer and moved back to the 18th tee to play the hole again.
This time, Blake took advantage of his opponent’s missed chance for a birdie once again and tapped in for a minus-one score, to take the trophy home.
"I wasn't calm. I was churning inside quite a bit," Blake said. "I do feel like I belong. I feel like I can compete when I get things going well, playing well. Not in an arrogant way, but I don't' really feel like I'm that intimidated by the players out
there”.
Meanwhile, O'Meara was disappointed with his performance and ended up securing the runner-up position for the fourth time since his last victory in 2010.
"I would say that it's been disappointing to finish second this many times out here on the Champions Tour," O'Meara said. "I take pride in my wins on the regular tour and the way I performed in the majors. Not to close the deal, it's a little bit frustrating".
Willie Wood, who recorded his first Champions Tour victory, last week, at the d**k's Sporting Goods Open, gave another strong performance and took the sole third position.
Michael Allen and Mark Calcavecchia posted eight-under par tournament scores to share the fourth spot on the leaderboard.
Jenkins, 64, who was on his way to becoming the oldest player in the history of the tour to record a victory, tied for the 21st position after suffering seven bogeys against a lone birdie.
