Jay Griffin takes early lead on Day 1 of 2011 Musto International Youth Match Racing Championship
At the conclusion on Day 1 racing of 2011 Musto International Youth Match Racing Championship hosted and organised by Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA), the host club’s Jay Griffin made it to the top podium spot with four victories in group races.
Tim Coltman of Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club, New Zealand, tied with Griffin with four race wins.
Speaking to local media at the conclusion of Day 1, Griffin said, “It was a tough day – we had a couple of fluky races. We were lucky to finish our third match with the breeze dying out and racing was abandoned. It was also probably one of our toughest matches
of the day against Ryan Davidson (USA). We had built up a reasonable lead but as the breeze dropped so did our lead.”
He further added, “I’m sailing with a pretty new team this week and so far we’ve been working well together. Kurt Hansen and Jack Breislin have joined the team from the Development Match Racing squads and are proving to be great sailors.”
The rivalry between Griffin and Coltman has again re-ignited in this event, as the duo went head-to-head against each other in last year’s Championship finals too, where Griffin was victorious. However, the results can be different this time, as both of
them have a lot of competition left. Only four races commenced today and the pair is yet to race against each other.
Day 1 results are given below:
Jay Griffin (CYCA) 4-0
Tim Coltman (RPNYC) 4-0
Jordan Reece (RSYS) 3-1
Ashlen Rooklyn (CYCA) 3-1
Jamie Dawson (RNZYS) 2-2
Chris Steele (RNZYS) 2-2
Ryan Davidson (BYC) 1-3
Carla Sexton (RPAYC) 1-3
Tim Forbes-Smith (CYCA) 0-4
Nicholas Howe (RSYS) 0-4
After the completion of first two races, the breeze vanished early in the afternoon. The race committee had to shift the race course to Double Bay after a small north easterly wind filled in. Only one match of Flight 3 between Griffin and Davidson could
be completed before the breeze died again.
Sailors had to wait for winds to fill in and after more than an hour of waiting, the breeze finally surrounded the race course, though on a low level, and the race committee moved the race course back to Rushcutters Bay.
