Jay Quinn and Shaun Joubert prevail in Round 1 of Mr. Price Pro Ballito
The seventh Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime event of the year, Mr. Price Pro Ballito, continued at the Surfers Beach in Ballito, South Africa, with the ninth and tenth heat of round of 96 (Round 1) on Monday, July 4th.
New Zealand’s Jay Quinn made his place in the round of 48 (Round 2) after prevailing in the ninth heat. America’s Austin Ware also managed to survive the heat by clinching the runner-up position. Brazil’s Heitor Alves and France’s Romain Cloitre rounded
out the third and fourth position, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
South Africa’s Shaun Joubert clinched top honours in heat 10, leaving Hawaii’s Kiron Jabour to settle for second position. Australia’s Adam Melling and Hawaii’s Mason Ho made a premature exit from the competition after finishing in third and fourth positions
respectively.
The day had started off with huge four-to-eight foot waves gracing the primary event site, but as the day progressed, the conditions began to deteriorate, making it tough for the surfers to earn big scores.
Despite the changing conditions, Quinn managed to land a solid performance during the ninth heat. He locked a wave late in the four-way battle to throw a string of sensational manoeuvres, earning 7.93 points for the effort. With an additional 7.00 points
off his second wave, he finished with a heat-total of 14.93 points.
Ware got off to an unimpressive start, earning 4.83 points off his first wave, but made a strong comeback later on, picking one of the biggest waves of the day and earning an impressive 8.17 off it. Even though the effort was unable to take him all the way
to the top, he did end up in second place to remain alive in the event.
Alves collected a 3.60 and 6.50 off his two best waves to finish in third place with a heat-total of 10.10 points, while Cloitre rounded out the bottom position after scoring 3.90 and 5.67 points from his two waves.
The 2010 ASP African Champion, Joubert, fought an intense battle with Jabour. Both surfers managed to more-or-less stay at par with each other’s performances. The Hawaiian scored 6.33 points off his very first wave to take the lead, to which the South African
responded with a 5.50-point wave to ease some pressure.
Jabour added another 5.60 points to his account to further extend his lead over Joubert. However, the local star managed to edge past his rival by making the most of the afternoon’s wind-affected waves and landing a front side aerial to earn 6.53 points
off the wave and finishing with a heat-total of 12.03 points and clinching victory.
Melling collected 3.83 points off his first wave and followed it up with a 4.23-point wave to finish in third position. Ho’s disappointing heat-total of 3.17 points put him in last place.
