Jay Thompson and Filipe Toledo conclude Round 3 of San Miguel Pro Zarautz with a victory
Australia’s Jay Thompson and Brazil’s Filipe Toledo qualified for the third round (Round of 48) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz after walking away with top honours from their respective Round 2 (Round of 96)
heats which took place at the main event site of Zarautz in Basque Country, Spain, on Thursday, August 30.
Brazil’s Simao Romao finished in runner-up place during the 23rd heat to accompany Thompson into the next round. Australia’s Stu Kennedy and Brazil’s Sidney Guimaraes rounded out the third and fourth position respectively, consequently getting
eliminated from the competition.
The 24th heat saw Basque Country’s Norman Landa finished behind Toledo in second place, thus moving alongside the winner into the next round of the competition. Spain’s Imanol Yeregi finished in third place, while Australia’s Cahill Bell-Warren
finished in fourth place. Both the surfers were consequently removed from the contention for the event title.
Deep into the afternoon session, the waves continued to put the skills and perseverance of the up-and-coming surfers to test, offering them clean three-to-four foot waves, but at the same time making it hard for them to ride these.
The 23rd heat saw Thompson adjust his surfing style to what best suited the conditions on hand. The Australian surfer collected a 6.00 early in the heat and went on to back it up with a 7.83-point ride, thus finishing with a heat-total of 13.83
points.
Romao made the Round 3 cut as well after finishing with a heat-total of 10.67 points, which included a 7.17 and 3.50-point ride.
Kennedy and Guimaraes failed to make much of an impact during the course of the battle, finishing in bottom-two positions after registering a heat-total of 9.94 and 5.77 points respectively.
The final heat of Round 2 as well as the day pitted Toledo against Landa, Yeregi and Bell-Warren in a four-man battle for survival.
The Brazilian surfer got off to an outstanding start, finding himself an 8.33-point ride early in the heat and went on to back it up with an ideal wave-score in the final minutes of the heat, thus finishing with a decisive heat-total of 16.66 points.
Landa registered a heat-total of 10.30 points, which proved sufficient to put him in runner-up place and thus take him through into the next round.
Yeregi finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.00 points, while Bell-Warren finished fourth after concluding the heat with a two-wave total of 8.27 points.
