Jay Thompson and Perth Standlick secure San Miguel Pro Zarautz quarter-final spot
Australia’s Jay Thompson and his fellow countryperson Perth Standlick emerged triumphant in their respective Round 5 (Round of 16) heats at the 6-Star Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Sa Miguel Pro Zarautz that continued at the main event
site of Zarautz in Basque Country, Spain, on Saturday, Spain, on Saturday, September 1.
The seventh heat saw Brazil’s Simao Romao failing to keep Thompson from walking away with the win into the next round, getting eliminated from the competition as a result.
Standlick got the better of South Africa’s Beyrick De Vries in the eighth heat, advancing through into the quarter-finals while removing the latter from the contention for the event title.
With difficult one-to-two foot waves on offer at the primary event site, the surfers had their work cut out. The forecast was not too good for the day as far as the swell was concerned, thus stripping surfers of the hope to find the conditions improve as
the day progressed.
The seventh heat of Round 5 saw Thompson take on Romao in a man-on-man battle for a place in the next stage of the competition. The Australian surfer did not waste too much time before getting down to business. Locking a relatively juicy wave in the early
minutes of the heat, he posted a 6.33 on the score-board and soon backed it up with an impressive 8.17-point ride, thus moving to a heat-total of 14.50 points.
Romao got off to a modest start, but stepped-up halfway through the heat, collecting an 8.23 off his first business-wave. He went on to add an additional 6.17 points to his account, thus missing out on the win by merely 0.10 points.
The eighth heat saw Standlick prevail over De Vries through an impressive performance. The Australian surfer got off to an excellent start, drawing first blood with a superb 8.27-point ride. A few minutes later, he locked his second business-wave and managed
to squeeze a 6.17 off it, thus moving to a heat-total of 14.44 points.
De Vries responded with a 6.17 and 5.50 off his best-two waves, thus finishing with a heat-total of 11.67 points. As a result, he was forced to surrender the heat and thus the quarter-final spot to his rival.
