Jayawardene eager to win World Cup trophy on home soil – Cricket News Update
Sri Lankan captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 World T20 championship, saying he wants to win at least one global event before calling time on his magnificent international career.
The 35-year-old top-order batsman, hailing from Colombo, was appointed as Sri Lanka’s skipper for a second term in February this year, after http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TM-Dilshan-c2691 had stepped down, following team’s consistent dismal performances.
He was the skipper of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 last year.
"Yes, we need to push a bit more,” Jayawardene told reporters here on Monday. “We will take each round as work in progress, try and execute a good game plan to accomplish a win," he added further.
The home skipper further said that the presence of all-rounders in the squad gives them balance for the high profile tournament.
"[The all-rounders] give us a lot of options in our team combination, so we can pick more batsmen or more bowlers to suit conditions and opposition, and still have a balanced team," said Jayawardene. “If your bowlers can bat as well, that gives you the depth in your line-up," he went on to add.
Jayawardene was also happy with the speedy recoveries of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KMDN-Kulasekara-c1802 (groin strain), and was confident the duo will be completely fit ahead of the world cup.
Jayawardene and his Indian counterpart, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MS-Dhoni-c2028, are the only surviving captains from the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup, hosted by South Africa in 2007. The right-hander said that the T20 game had evolved a lot since the inaugural World Cup, five years ago.
Sri Lanka, the hosts for the latest instalment of the marquee tournament, have been pooled in Group C, alongside http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zimbabwe-c3045, and will open up their world cup campaign against the Rhodesians at Hambantota, next Tuesday, September 18, 2012.
