Jayawardene hails lower order for finishing things in Sri Lanka’s way – Cricket News Update
The Sri Lankan captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746, at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart on Friday, February 24,
2012.
Chasing a competitive target of 280 posted by the hosts from their allotted quota of 50 overs, valiant half centuries from Jayawardene and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/LD-Chandimal-c1831 put the Sri Lankan’s in a comfortable position. But the comfortable win seemed
to be slipping out of Islanders hands towards the end as wickets started clattering at regular intervals.
Chandimal’s wicket in the 45th over with almost 40 runs still to get, could have been a huge blow for the tourists but http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AD-Mathews-c913 took the responsibility, and played crucial roles
in steering the side to a three-wicket win in the end.
Impressed with trio’s significant cameos, the Lankan skipper said that despite being short on much needed experience, the lower order handled the situation very well.
"These guys, a couple of them haven't had much experience, but I thought they handled the situation very well," said Jayawardene while speaking to the media reporters at the post-match press conference on Friday night.
"They didn't go for those big shots, they just kept it going, singles, singles, and dragged the game as far as they could. And then when they wanted to hit that big shot, we knew that Thisara can do that, Angelo can do that, so we
set it up nicely. They're learning, that's the most important thing,” he added further.
The three-wicket win over Australia earned the Lankans four more points, steering them to the top of the Commonwealth Bank series points table with a tally of 15 points. Hosts trail them by one point while Dhoni’s Men in Blue are at
the bottom with just 10 points. All three teams have played six matches apiece. The last two games are crucial for each side, as a defeat in any of the last two matches could cost their respective sides a berth in the best of three finals.
