"I had a chat to the selectors before this tournament started. I was going to step down from T20 captaincy after this World Cup. I personally feel that for Sri Lanka, going forward, we need a younger leader," said Jayawardene while speaking to media reporters after the 36-run defeat at the hands of Caribbean contingent, on Sunday.
"It's a great opportunity for somebody to start in that T20I format. I've spoken to the selectors and they were quite happy with that choice, so that's going ahead," he added further.
Jayawardene’s deputy, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AD-Mathews-c913 is the obvious choice to fill the breach left by the former’s decision. The all-rounder has been groomed over the past 18 months to take the reins of the national side in the shortest format of the game.
The veteran batsman also said that he will assess his future as ODI and Test captain after Sri Lanka’s crucial tour Down Under, later this year.
"Obviously, I will remain captain in the Tests and ODIs till the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 series in December and then take a call on my future as captain," he said.
Replying to a query regarding his future in the national T20 side, the veteran batsman said with a smile, "It depends whether the new captain wants me in the team."
