Jayson Werth does justice with $126 million contract signed with Washington Nationals in 2010-MLB
By the time outfielder Jayson Werth inked seven-year contract with Washington Nationals in 2010, criticism emerged. Offering him huge amount of money was not expected by the experts as the Nationals had many other areas to address back then.
However, by helping the Nationals in the fourth game of the National League Division series at a crucial juncture, he somehow has vindicated the decision of the management of offering him blockbuster deal in 2010.
Werth was the most prolific run scorer for the Nationals in the second half of the regular season.
Although he remained out from the season for a number of weeks due to injury, on his comeback he produced quality hits and lifted the Nationals’ offence regularly.
He is one of those batters of the Nationals who have the experience of playing in the post-season. With the fact that most of the Nationals’ players are young and hence cannot handle pressure appropriately, Werth holds peculiar significance for the team’s
chances ahead in the season.
In-fact, he has an extra responsibility to perform in the line-up when the likes of Michael Morse and Bryce Harper are struggling.
Werth has proven his importance to the team by striking a walk-off home-run in the ninth inning against the Cardinals on Thursday. If the Nationals did not win that game, they will have been eliminated.
Jayson is extremely excited about the last game of the series. He is looking forward to see the starter Gio Gonzalez standing out on the mound and helping the Nationals claiming the series victory.
“I expect Gio to come out and pitch his game. . . . We won this game. All bets are off tomorrow,” Werth said.
Furthermore, Werth will be looking to make sure he keeps his momentum going and continues with his top-notch form in the season.
Expressing his jubilation after lifting the team to victory on Thursday, he is unable to believe in the moments of glory.
“It’s almost like I blacked out, for sure,” Werth said. “It’s like a Will Ferrell moment.”
The task has not been accomplished yet. The Nationals can proceed further in the season only after winning the final contest.
It will be interesting to see how Werth performs in the next game.
