Jayson Werth expresses his views about Stephen Strasburg’s shutdown - MLB Update
As it has been confirmed that the Washington Nationals’ starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg will be shut-down after two more starts, one of his team-mates Jayson Werth has offered a detailed insight of the decision and has explained as to how it is good for
the team.
Werth finds the present uproar from various quarters surprising as he believes that the team officials have given clear indications about the shut-down even before the start of the season.
The issue of an innings limit on Strasburg is not new and that even in the last season he was withdrawn after he threw a specified number of innings. In light of this, the criticism lacks the basis on which it can be considered valid. Furthermore Werth is
of the view that whatever the management has undertaken is for the betterment of the team as well as for Strasburg.
Regardless of the position that the Nationals maintain on the table at the moment and their chances for winning the World Series, Werth believes nothing can be considered at the detriment of Strasburg’s health.
Strasburg is gradually improving after every year.
If the management keeps increasing his innings every year as opposed to asking him to throw throughout a single season then Strasburg can eschew injuries. He can serve the club for many years to come in this way. Furthermore the potential that Strasburg
actually promises can be enjoyed by the team.
For Werth it is business as usual and therefore contains nothing worth getting surprised about.
Werth said, “So I have no reaction. This has gone on all season. People have been talking about this the whole year since his season begun. I don’t know why everyone was so surprised. This has been the protocol for two years now. I mean, it’s real easy for
people not in the organization and not on this team to point fingers and call people names and say that this is what should happen and this is what shouldn’t happen. But the bottom line is, this is our guy on our team.”
Irrespective of Werth’s views about the shut-down, the fact of the matter is that the decision holds immense significance in relation to the team’s success in the rest of the season.
Watching Nationals trying to keep their momentum afloat without Strasburg will be interesting.
