Jayson Werth goes through wrist surgery and will be out for 12 weeks - MLB Update
Right fielder, Jayson Werth left the game the other day after hurting his left wrist. Initially, management believed that the dislocation was not severe. However as he underwent surgery on Monday, it came out that his wrist was affected seriously and thus
a steel plate had to be added on.
Werth is one of the most dependable sluggers with the Washington Nationals.
Losing him for twelve weeks is a huge setback to their plans. He had a tremendous Spring Training and had hit mammoth homers there, which were to replicate in the season.
Against the backdrop of injuries by Ryan Zimmerman, who though is recovering fast and Michael Morse, the latest addition to this list will further delimit options for the manager, Davey Johnson.
Dr. Richard A. Berger did his surgery and revealed an extent to which his wrist was vulnerable if immediate actions were not taken.
Primarily, powerful arms are strength for the Nationals and with few more sluggers in their offence, they have a potential to be an infallible side in the season.
As soon as Bryce Harper made dramatic entry in the Majors, discussions had started regarding an eventual invincibility of the Nationals. After all, Harper became a right fit to the loophole, their offence was suffering.
However, with Werth now injured, the Nationals will look to draw consistent shows from rest of their hitters. Role of Ian Desmond obviously will be significant in this regard.
In-case, hitters, up in the line-up do not lift the charge and so does sluggers down in the innings, lower run-support for pitchers will leave the Nationals in difficult situations.
That can easily result in losses, which can be demoralising to an extent of giving way long losing streaks.
Meanwhile, Werth will go back and try to see his wrist rehabilitated at the earliest.
Following doctor’s instructions strictly will be decisive for his return. For the kind of injury he is having can take even worse shape with a little negligence during rehabilitation process.
The Nationals will hope that Morse recovers and makes to the line-up soon, so that vacuum of Werth's absence can be filled. Harper can also go a long way in this regard.
How Johnson marshal the remaining troops left with him will be interesting to observe in the games ahead.
