Jayson Werth makes the Washington Nationals smile in his Opening Day start
Former Philadelphia Phillies player, Jayson Werth, could not have asked for anything less. The player, who moved to the Washington Nationals last year, impressed a Washington crowd of 39,000 fans as he made two astonishing catches, and went 1 – for – 4 against
the Atlanta Braves. Werth looked set to score in the first inning but was stranded on third base, following dismissals of Adam LaRoche and Michael Morse.
Manager Jim Riggleman was more than happy about the situation. His catches in the outfield impressed a lot of followers.
"Jayson did a good job," Riggleman said. "He got on base, gave us a chance. We had a nice opportunity there early. He played a good defensive ballgame."
The right fielder had a chance to talk about his defensive play and was courteous as he addressed his peers.
"They were just standard plays," Werth said. "The second one, I was trying to keep the ball out of the lights. I kind of overran it a little bit in between steps. When I caught it, I was a little awkward on it. These lights are a little different here than
most places that you play. They are straight across the top. Most places have a light and then another light. That takes getting used to. This is my home park. I will settle in after a few games."
Werth revealed that he enjoys batting second in the lineup, but was quick to point out that a change in strategy is imminent, which will reduce his chances. Riggleman utilized Werth in that position because of his .388 average on base percentage with the
Philadelphia Phillies last year.
He told the press that the change really did not concern him. He explained that with the cover the team possessed at the moment, it was better for him to hit in the region. He affirmed that with time, Danny Espinosa and Ian Desmond would be able to start
on that position, rendering him useless for the role.
