Jayson Werth reunites with Philadelphia Phillies but helps Washington Nationals win
Jayson Werth was prepared for a reunion with the Philadelphia Phillies and much to the delight of the Washington Nationals, he was critical in punching his former team out of the encounter at Nationals Park.
The player welcomed his former club players in Washington. He joked around with Carlos Ruiz and Placido Polanco. He also took the time to interact with Raul Ibanez.
However, the situation changed as soon as the Nationals began their fixture against the Phillies at home. The player switched sides in December, 2010, when he joined the hosts on a seven-year deal worth $126 million.
Nevertheless, he went 2-for-3 as he tagged that figure up with two runs, a base steal, a walk, a double, a RBI and a home run. The right fielder was crucial in getting the club a 7–4 victory over Philadelphia.
While Phillies fans booed Werth, the player took his effort for what it earned the Nationals.
"Obviously, any time you hit a home run you are going to have some satisfaction", Werth said. "Was it extra special against those guys? Probably a little bit. I was trying to perform well for Charlie [Manuel]. He hasn't seen me play in a while".
The player was booed constantly throughout the game and it led to a preview of what is to come when the Nationals head over to Philadelphia.
"I was kind of waiting for it", Werth said. "Once I got it, it was kind of funny".
However, the outfielder did affirm that he felt nothing special when he went up against Manager Manuel’s squad.
"Not really", he said. "Once the game started, it was business as usual. It was fun to watch them play on the other side of the diamond. It's good to see those guys. Obviously I've been through a lot with them".
Werth clarified that he wishes his former team nothing but the best. As for being a Phillies player, the outfielder said the chapter has closed. He maintains now that he and his former club are moving on.
