Jayson Werth shines as Washington Nationals beat Philadelphia Phillies 7-4 – MLB Update
Washington Nationals’ Jayson Werth put in a tremendous effort as he went up against his former team, the Philadelphia Phillies for a 7-4 victory.
Werth recently left the Phillies as he signed a seven year deal worth $126 million.
It seems that the Phillies’ fans managed to fill Nationals Park for the opportunity to watch their former player. The crowd was loud and taunted Werth with boos each time he came out on the field.
Werth showed his worth as to why the Nationals are paying him such a large amount as he managed to get a double during the fourth inning. He also started a three run inning to put the Nationals ahead for the remainder of the game. During the fifth inning,
he hit a tremendous solo home-run to give the Nationals a 5-1 lead over the Phillies.
Credit should be give to Werth for trying to act like the game against his former team-mates wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. He called it ‘business as usual’ but a few moments couldn’t stop him from taking a dig at his former manager, Philadelphia’s
Charlie Manuel. "I was just trying to perform well for Charlie," Werth said with a smile. "He hasn't seen me play in a while.
He also expressed his delight over hitting the home-run in the fifth inning as he said, "Any time you hit a home run you're going to have some satisfaction, was it extra special against those guys? Probably a little bit."
Washington was leading 5-1 after five innings. They were 6-1 after seven innings but they never let their guard down. As the Phillies are known to fight it out to the last inning. However, the Nationals held on to take an impressive 7-4 victory over the
Phillies.
It was an impressive display by Werth as he performed brilliantly against his former team. He showed why he is worth so much to the Nationals as they forge ahead and try for a successful regular season run against the top teams in the league.
