Jayson Werth sparks as Washington Nationals defeat Chicago Cubs 5-4 – MLB Update
Washington Nationals’ right-fielder, Jayson Werth had a remarkable day with the bat as he went 1-for-3 and added one run with two RBIs in the Nationals’ 5-4 victory against the Chicago Cubs at Nationals Park, Washington, on July 4.
At the bottom of the first inning, the Nationals’ offence managed to get two runs and took a 2-0 lead. Laynce Nix singled towards right-field, Roger Bernadina posted one run and Danny Espinosa moved to third base. The second run was taken by Espinosa when
Werth drove a single-run shot to shallow right-field. Nix advanced to second base at the end of the second inning.
The Cubs contributed their first run in the second inning to cut their deficit 2-1 when Carlos Pena added a single run on the drive of Marlon Byrd to centre-field. In the third inning, Casey Coleman flied out to second base and Darwin Barney grounded out
to short-stop position without giving any run to their team.
The Cubs went ahead 3-2 in the fourth inning by posting two quick runs. Aramis Ramirez and Byrd both added two runs when Alfonso Soriano singled off centre-field. Later on, Soriano advanced to second base on a wide throw. The pitchers again got the batters
out during the fifth inning due to their outstanding throws.
Jordan Zimmermann was little bit unsteady for the Nationals as he threw six innings with an ERA of 2.82 and allowed four runs on eight hits with four earned runs. He struck-out five batters and gave away one walk on 93 pitches.
During the sixth inning, the Cubs added one run and the Nationals were also able to post one run to advance their score-board 4-3. Ramirez scored a single run for the Cubs when Geovany Soto singled to right-field. On the other side, Nix completed a single
run when Werth was grounded out to first base.
The game was tied 4-all in the seventh inning when Nix walked and Ian Desmond posted a single run on the score-board. Eighth and ninth inning of the game were score-less as the batters got out to different field spots. In the additional 10th inning,
Werth scored a tie-breaking run on the wild pitch of Carlos Marmol to lift the Nationals lead 5-4.
The Nationals are leading the four game series 1-0 at Washington after this exciting win.
