Jayson Werth to assume practice sessions after All-Star break, says Davey Johnson - MLB
The Washington Nationals’ right-fielder Jayson Werth is heading to his first appearance in the season after an injury earlier in the season. He had his left wrist broken during a match while catching a fly ball during the month of May. Immediately afterwards,
he was declared out from the season for a number of weeks.
Announcement was a big blow to the Nationals at that time. It came at a time when their offence was struggling immensely. Missing Jayson’s slugging maestro was the last thing they wanted.
In light of the fact that Michael Morse had not returned to the line-up from the injury, their offence was short of sluggers. Sources of drawing big hits in the games had become limited.
If it was not for a timely debut by the rookie outfielder Bryce Harper and a relatively better performance by Ian Desmond, their quest may have gotten derailed.
Harper had turned out an instant success. Besides, their pitchers made amends for whatever loop-holes the offence was suffering.
Right now, the Nationals have things going to their favour. Not only they lead their Division, the whole of National League has them as the most successful team in the season.
With Morse back in the line-up and third-baseman Ryan Zimmerman showing consistency on the plate in making hits, they are all set to enjoy one of their best seasons in their history.
Once Werth comes back, he will strengthen their offence further. According to manager Davey Johnson, Werth still feels pain when he swings on the plate. Therefore, the best time for him to assume practice will be after the ASG break, he stated.
“I would think he’s not going to do too much swinging until after the all-star break,” Johnson said.
His progress as regard to an initially estimated time about the comeback is as per the schedule. Either the start of August or the end of July can be a time for his entry in the line-up.
Meanwhile, Johnson will be pleased by the fact that he will have more options available following the ASG break. Therefore, maintaining the top position on the National League East Division table will be easier.
An exact timeline of return by Werth will be known after he takes swings and evaluates as to what extent his body can support him while striking hits.
He will be looking forward to comeback immediately after the ASG break.
