Jayson Werth’s brilliance leads Washington Nationals to 2-1 triumph against St. Louis Cardinals-MLB
Right fielder Jayson Werth strikes the game winning home-run in the ninth as Washington Nationals beat St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 on October 11, 2012 at Nationals Park in the fourth game of the five match National League Division Series.
After losing two games in a row, Thursday’s contest was a must win for the Nationals. Their confidence was down as they entered into the match.
However, they managed an early lead in the match by scoring one run in the second inning.
Their lead did not last long as the score tied after the Cardinals managed one run in the third inning.
From there onward, the pressure mounted on the Nationals.
From the way their batters performed in the last couple of matches, it was hard to expect that the Nationals will end up reinstating the lead and ultimately winning.
Thanks to Werth who stepped up in the last inning and smacked a home-run toward deep left, Washington kept the Cardinals from clinching the victory.
Ross Detwiler was impressive on the mound as he started for the Nationals.
He had a huge responsibility on his shoulders after Jordan Zimmermann and Edwin Jackson disappointed Washington in the last two games.
He lived up to the challenge as he gave up just one run in six innings.
Relief pitcher Drew Storen came in the last inning. Under pressure, he completed the inning scoreless as he claimed the win.
Offensively the Nationals relied on two home-runs to score runs.
Werth after heroic performance in the match appears to be extremely excited about the last game of the series. He wants to replicate his stand out show in the upcoming contest.
''It's what you play all season for, and what you work out all winter for, and what you get to spring training early for,'' Werth said. ''We have a chance tomorrow to take that next step. I know my teammates will be ready. And the city will, too.''
Nationals’ Davey Johnson has enjoyed the way Werth finished the game.
''That's the way that game should have ended: Jayson Werth hitting a home run,'' Davey Johnson said.
While the Nationals won, their offence was still far from satisfactory.
Johnson will be expecting most of his batters contributing offensively in the last game of the series.
