Question:

Jazz Dance Class Help

I'm 17, and I'm taking Jazz Dance in school. The description said that it was recommended that I take Modern Dance before Jazz Dance, but for some reason Jazz Dance is in the fall and Modern Dance in the spring. I've never taken a dance class before, but I do figure skating.

So, what can I expect, and how can I prepare for the class and do well in it, especially because I didn't take the recommended Modern Dance?

  1. Modern could help you, but you can still be great without it. I do Ballet and Jazz. Ballet and jazz are very similar. In ballet you do the moves with grace and poise and some times attitude, in jazz you do it with sassy and attitude and a lil s**y. so they are good things to do together.

  2. Hmmmm.  I find it interesting that they would even recommend that.  I would think ballet is a better pre-cursor for Jazz, but then, that's just my opinion.  Your figure skating has probably given you a decent basis for your dance class.  If it's a beginner's class, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

It may help to have some knowledge of the terminology, though.  Here's a great site to help you with that.

  3. i personally think jazz can actually help you more in modern cause it gives you the technique. and im sure you will be fine taking the jazz class first.
