Jazz/P Bass Differences?

Question

So, I've been playing guitar for quite some time now, and have recently been wanting to get a bass. I've been looking at Fender Jazz and P Basses and was wondering what the main differences in tone, how the neck feels, etc. were. Thanks in advance.

i have noticed that jazz basses sound better alone for like  solos, but a precision bass sounds better for things in a band or something.
