I was taking a taking a test today, and it notated a C, F, A, C arpeggio followed by a descending major scale on the C (i.e. C,F,A,C,B,A,G,F,E). What do you call this technique in jazz? Two of the four answers were scalar and or change-running? I'm not sure if I called them by the right name, but If you could give me an idea of what technique this is, that would be great! I don't know much about jazz (I'm a classical pianist), so these techniques are pretty new to me. Thank you!!

  1. Its sometimes known as a "jazz run"; its just a jazz scale played backwards (as you said, a descending major scale), usually consisting of arpeggios.

  2. the jazz run is the  answer i checked the dictionary  and jazz is the most unique types of musics art

    hope this helps

  3. Hey

    The arpeggio is an F major 3-note arpeggio and the scale is the B locrian scale.

    As for your answer on scalar, you were correct or half correct depending on the actual question.

    Ascending scalar runs add tension and when you descend, you resolve the tension.

    This technique can be called note- skipping (string skipping on the guitar).

  4. it is in a fact a jazz run.

    a jazz run is basically composed of any MAJOR scale and is reversed, the arpegio is in front and the descending scale is followed.

    for example: the Bb(B Flat) concert major scale begins on Bb

    (depending on which instrument you play since in fact you have to transpose), you play piano which is non transposing as you may know.

    so it goes a s follows;

    Bb,D,F,Bb (notice that on all jazz run's, the arpeggio's begin with the tonic of the scale note, and end with the tonic an octave higher)

    and the rest as follows

    Bb,A,G,F,Eb,D,C,Bb: so thats the descending scale.

    put it all together and you get a nice jazz run.. for very good examples of jazz runs, you may want to listen to some Frank Sinatra.

    sorry, very long, put i tried to explain so you actually learned it, and not just got the answer to pass the test. =)

    -hope i helped
