Question:

Jazzmaster Guitar model question?

Okay so I'm sure that I will buy either the Jazzmaster reissue or the Jazzmaster J Mascis artist model. J Mascis is one of my favorite artists and I definately want to get his sound. I would like to know which model you prefer if you have played both and if there is a difference between the artist or reissue model. Although I would assume the artist model would be best to get the artist's sound but you never know. Also! There are jumbo frets on the artist model, would this make it easier to play, even if you only had medium size hands(I'm 5'10 and slender). Thanks for the help!

  1. If you want J Mascis's sound then definately go for his model. The bridge on that particular guitar is a lot better than the reissue as I own both. The pickups are almost identical but the longer tremelo plate on the vintage reissue gives it a little less sustain and more clankiness, which I actually prefer. The major difference other than the bridge is the price! J Mascis's model goes for almost 700 dollars cheaper than the vintage reissue. Oh, another huge difference is his model is made of basswood and weighs almost half of what the vintage model does. The jumbo frets really aren't that much different and if someone didn't tell you they weren't medium - jumbo you probably wouldn't even notice. I personally like the vintage reissue better, but for the price the J Mascis model is hard to beat and Japanese made to boot, which is very similar to American quality. Don't buy the Mexican model (Classic Player) though, it is very hot sounding and has the typical Mexican made flaws that make the 800 dollars hard to swallow in my book. Hope that helps.
