  1. You should also select "Open Volume Control" by right-clicking on the little speaker icon where you normally left click to get the simple volume slider, and check to make sure that the sliders are up (except microphone, as it is irrelevant to this).  I've had a couple programs drop one of these sliders and not set it back when I shut down the program - particularly two DVD playing programs.  So, with a sound feed active, wiggle these sliders around to see if that gets you your sound back.

  2. Sound card might be bad?

  3. Check the windows volume control to make sure it has not been turned down or muted.  Windows Media Player has a slide type control that will operate it.  Check your sound card output with earphones - if it is ok, then speakers are the problem.

Next, check connections from your sound card - pull the 3.5mm stereo plug out and put it back in again a few times to clean any corrosion.  Make sure it is plugged into the line output jack (usually green).

Lastly check the wall wart power supply if your speakers have one - is it plugged in, and is it producing power?

A final test would be to move the speakers to another PC known to have a working sound card.  No sound = dead speakers.

  4. Chuck has the best answer.  One more thing may be worth trying, re-install the sound card drivers or search for updated ones.
