Jealous of new puppy?

our pug mix is very jealous of the new puppy. he has always been the baby, the center of attention in the house. but now mom brought home an 8 week old australian shepherd/border collie mix. he's fine until the puppy gets near a toy he wants or until the puppy comes to me for attention. i am sort of pee wees person and he can't seem to deal with sharing me.

currently i lock him in the kennel for an hour after he tries to attack the puppy and of course we are not letting him be alone with the baby until we can be sure he won't attack (the baby's half his size). how can we get him to accept the baby and not attack out of jealousy?

i guess they really are like children.

i would introduce them slowly while they are both on leashes and let them sniff each other so if your dog tries to attack the puppy you can quickly pull them both away. and so that you jealous dog doesn't get mad reward them both at the same time and praise equally.

if your dog tries attacking the puppy scold him and and if your in a room with a door, put him outside the door and close it. don't make a lot of sounds and if he scratches at the door and whines wait till he stops and wait for a few seconds while he is still quiet. if he stays quiet let him in and praise and reward him.

i don't really know what more to say. gradually over time i hope and would think they will learn to like each other and wont get so jealous.

this happended to us keep them in different rooms

also do speical things with each of them.

put them together a little each day until they grow to like each other

do special things with the older dog like bringing him for walks without the puppy

This happened to me. I have a 9 year old part chow dog and he got jealous, and mad when I got a new puppy. German Shepperd. Just keep them away from each other. When I take all my dogs on a walk he is perfectly fine with the puppy. Try doing something they both like. They should bond.
