Jean-Eric Vergne: I do not believe in rookie status – Formula 1 news
Toro Rosso driver Jean-Eric Vergne has said that he does not believe in rookie status and considers himself a complete Formula 1 driver.
Vergne is currently at 13th place in the drivers’ championship with only four points which he scored in the second race held at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia on wet track after securing 8th place finish. Furthermore, he has not been able to score
even a single point in the other three races of the season.
Moreover, he started from 11th place in the grid in the season opener held at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia which is his best performance in this season’s qualifying so far.
Vergne said that even though he can present the excuse of being a new comer this year, however, he said that he does not want to affiliate himself with the status of a rookie as he has now become a full fledged driver.
“Of course I could use the excuse of being a rookie, but I don’t want to because I’ve made some mistakes that should not have happened to a driver, no matter what your status,” Vergne said. “I actually don’t believe so much in that rookie status thing. I
am a fully-fledged driver.”
He added that there is not a big difference in F1 championship as there are same tracks, cars and engineers which matter. The only point of distinction is its broad dimension.
“It is a bit different. But in the end it’s just cars and tracks and engineers - like in every race series,” he explained. “It has bigger dimensions but the job is the same. There is someone in front of you and you want to pass them. It’s that simple.”
Besides, the French driver said that he is just focusing on improving his sport by delivering his best performances in the season ahead. He also said that they need to keep on making the substantial advancements and essential preparations for the upcoming
races so as to enhance the pace of their car in order to fight for a competitive position in this year’s championship.
