The Stade de Reims president has admitted that Reims were totally outplayed by Lyon at Stade de Gerland this Sunday and it was a fair result in many aspects
Les rouges et blancs were thrashed by Les Gones at the weekend with the Rhone giants winning 3-0 in the end. The result has pushed the newly promoted side down to 13th place in the league with 15 points on the table after 13 games.
Reims president, Jean-Pierre Caillot, is of the view that the hosts were clearly the better side of the two on Sunday and they showed their dominance on the pitch. There was an obvious gulf in class between the two teams and his side couldn’t get anything
out of the match despite playing well.
While talking to reporters, the 51-year-old stated that conceding three goals is not a good sign for any team but admitted that Lyon totally outplayed his side.
"What can you say when you concede three goals? There was a gulf in class between the two sides tonight; you have to face facts like this.”
The president added that there is no denying that the hosts were the better team on the pitch but the final outcome of the game is a bit harsh. Caillot said Lyon scored right before the interval and that was very daunting for players’ morale.
“Still, the final outcome was a bit cruel, with Lyon scoring just before half-time and then an almost identical one later but the score is a fair reflection of how the match played out.”
The Frenchman said that the matches against top teams provide smaller teams with an opportunity to show the world that they belong here but added that a point from Sunday’s game would have been better.
“You can say that matches like these, against tough opposition, are 'bonus matches', but it would still be good to be taking some points.”
Jean-Pierre Caillot added that the result has put extra pressure on Stade de Reims to perform better in the upcoming matches as they cannot afford to lose a lot of matches in the league.
“This result does put a bit of pressure on us for our next match."
