However, the Frenchman has rediscovered his golden touch this season, and has already scored three goals in four matches for the Rhone giants.
And his impressive performances haven’t got unnoticed. Former Marseille striker, Jean-Pierre Papin, has been impressed by what he has seen of the 26-year-old so far.
While talking to reporters, the former France international stated that he always believed in Gignac’s abilities and he expects him to deliver this season.

"I said before the season started that Gignac would be OM's best new signing, and it's turned out to be the case," the 1991 European Footballer of the Year told reporters.
Jean-Pierre Papin stated that Gignac was lacking confidence and that affected his overall performance. However, the former Lorient player is back to his best and Papin expects phenomenal things from the striker this season.
"It doesn't take much for things to click for you: a goal or a good performance, and your confidence come back.”
The 48-year-old former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 international added that people who think Gignac will not be able to rediscover his best form again, are living a lie.
Papin said that the Marseille striker had couple of tough years at Stade Velodrome because of injuries and different issues. However, Gignac is still a quality player and he will prove his worth this season.
“He had a tough start, and because he's from the area, it's all the more difficult for him as he really wants to do well here. But when you have quality, you don't just lose it overnight."
Olympique de Marseille take on FC Nancy in their next match of the 2012/2013 Ligue 1 campaign, and Gignac would be hoping to put in an eye catching performance at Stade Marcel-Picot.
