Jean-Rene Lisnard, Lukas Lacko reach the final round qualifiers – US Open 2011
An upset result was seen in the second round qualies of the US Open, as the 17th seed Italian, Paolo Lorenzi crashed out of the competition at the hands of Jean-Rene Lisnard of Monaco on Thursday afternoon.
The contest took place on the hard courts of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, with Lisnard registering victory in three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1. The
17thseed Italian hung in the matchup for two hours and four minutes before he finally submitted in the third set to let his opponent through to the qualifying competition.
Lisnard was off to a blistering start in the opener and absolutely blew away Lorenzi, breaking the Italian serve in every single game of the set. He nailed three consecutive serve breaks to seal the first set to his name at 6-0
but the Italian competitor made a very strong comeback in the game to take the second set at 6-4, levelling the matchup at one-all.
Lorenzi’s game again went through a terrible slump in the final set, with Lisnard stinging two more serve breaks to drive him out of the competition. Break point conversions in the second and then in the sixth game from Lisnard
ended up the contest in his favour, granting him a pass to play in the qualifying competition. He just needs to overcome the second seeded Chilean, Paul Capdeville, in the next matchup to make it to the main draws of the last Grand Slam tournament of the year.
Seeded at number 28 in the tournament, Lukas Lacko of Slovakia also won his second round matchup against Marius Copil of Romania on Thursday afternoon. The Slovak wrapped up victory at 7-6(4), 6-3, taking 98 minutes of play to
make it to the qualifying competition of the US Open.
The contest appeared evenly poised at the start but Slovakian domination got its effect in the second set to lead Lacko to victory. No serve breaks were seen in the opening set, which was taken into a tie breaker round for decision.
Lacko bagged the first set tie breaker at 7-6(4), to get one up in the matchup and then continued with his winning impetus in the following set as well.
The only serve break of the day came in the sixth game of the second set, with Lacko closing out victory at 6-3 to book a match with the third seeded Turk competitor, Marsel Ilhan, in the next round.
