Jean Todt says Schumacher can still perform well on grid with a perfect car – Formula 1 news
International Automobile Federation (FIA) president Jean Todt has said that he is sure Mercedes GP driver Michael Schumacher can still perform well on the grid, if the team provides him with a competitive Formula 1 car.
Todt added that it is a fact Schumacher is well-experienced and most talented driver in the sport at the moment. In addition, he stated that he still has the potential to win races in his F1 career with a perfect car.
He said, “Last year Michael [Schumacher] faced some problems with his comeback, as success in F1 depends on a number of combinations. You need to be a great driver, in the best car and in one of the best teams. I believe Mercedes have the means and capable
of developing a car to match his talent.”
The FIA President also mentioned that the 42-year-old driver is a great world champion of Formula 1 history at the moment, as he has won the world championship seven times in the past.
Todt added, “It was very important for the sport that a great driver like Michael returned to the scene, which naturally caused much speculation. He won seven world championships, five of them for Ferrari and decided to end his career at 38 years of age.”
The seven-time world champion retired from the sport at the end of 2006. After that, he was cut off from Formula 1 racing for three years. Schumacher rejoined the racetrack in 2010, where he started his season with the Petronas-sponsored team.
The German was unable to finish his race on the podium throughout the 2010 F1 season after coming back from his three-year retirement. The 2010 season’s results were really disappointing for him, as he was hoping for another F1 title.
He took a below par start to the 2011 Formula 1 season. He is still not able to show his best performance on the grid so far, as he had before his retirement. The team driver blamed the lack of his MGP-W02 car’s pace for his disappointing results in the
ongoing season.
After 11 rounds of the season, Schumacher is sitting at the 10th position with 32 points in the 2011 drivers’ championship at the moment.
Let’s see how he manages his races in the last eight rounds of the 2011 season.
