Jean Todt tips Sebastian Vettel to break Michael Schumacher’s record – Formula 1 news
Jean Todt has said that Sebastian Vettel may well be on his way to breaking Michael Schumacher’s record.
Current president of F1’s governing FIA Todt was also Schumacher’s boss and a close personal friend when the German driver was with Ferrari.
“Vettel could beat Schumacher’s records,” predicted Frenchman Todt, referring also to the seven time world champion’s 91 wins, “but it’s not something that needs any more reflection than that.”
“They are both great types, the same only in their backgrounds as Germans, with very different personalities and characters,” he said.
Schumacher was 26 of age when he claimed his second world championship title and Vettel has achieved that feat two years earlier than him.
Vettel narrowly won the 2010 season world title snatching it from his teammate Mark Webber at the latter part of the season and in the process became the youngest world champion in the history of the sport.
2011 though was Vettel dominance throughout, the German driver claimed 11 wins during the season and secured his second world championship title four races before the season ended also helping his team secure the constructors title for a second time in a
row.
Such was Vettel’s brilliance that Webber was only able to secure a solitary Grand Prix win in the last race of the season in Brazil, and that too when Vettel had some gear problems and was radioed by his team engineers to slow his pace to save the car and
the points.
Critics hailed Vettel’s 2010 win as a one –off but his 2011 win has put him in the limelight for better things in the future. Yet some critics still believe that Vettel may have been helped by a dominant Red Bull car, but those theories will soon be put
to test come 2012 season kick off in Australia on March 18th 2012.
It is being speculated though that Red Bull will not be the only dominant team on the grid with McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes picking up their pace with their new car editions for the 2012 season. The season will feature six world champions after the return
of Kimi Raikkonen. Let’s see how the grid shapes up come 2012.
